The Purpose of Shadowing

"As educators within educational systems, we do not often have the opportunity to observe one child and experience instruction from that child's perspective...ELL shadowing forces us to look at the specific needs of one student and reflect on how the things we do and don't do every day, either positively or negatively, impact that student's instructional progress.  When you go into a classroom full to the brim with thirty students, it is easy to place blame or be overwhelmed by the sheer numbers.  When you look at the instructional needs of one child or one adolescent at a time, it is difficult to turn away.  As educators, we become connected again and the reasons that we went into education are realized anew."

SIOP @ MVHS

In the 2011-2012 academic year, Mountain View High School adopted the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol to address the needs of English learners, especially long-term English learners (LTELs).  Although the SIOP Model may be relatively new to Mountain View, researched-based best practices are employed every day.  These include STRP, Big 6, and the Cornell Notes system.

We created the Instructional Framework to organize the common instructional practices we wanted to refine across campus.  Combining the District's SIOP Cycle training with best practices developed on campus, the common instructional strategies to the left have been implemented at MVHS to meet our school goals in reducing the D/F rate and increasing academic conversations, engagement and achievement for all students.

You can read a little more about these common instructional practices on the menu to the left. On the right are some teacher resources related to the common instructional strategies, including classroom posters, graphic organizers,  procedures, and other tools teachers can use in the classroom. Special thanks to Mr. Keith Bahrenburg, Mr. Chris Lewis, Ms. Joyce Yu, the Special Education Department, and the EMUHSD Instructional Coaches (Mr. Kent Besocke, Mr. Allende Palma-Saracho, Dr. Karen Kennedy, and Mr. Justin Lim) for collaborating in creating the resources and elaborating on the ideas presented on this website.
